Through soil color studies, meditative exploring, and pulling lines of dirt bonded with egg yolk from a brush, I unravel my own language of place. I often re-visit areas, and spend time observing the natural world as a companion practice to time spent in the studio. I find my experiences to be nuanced like the marks I make from the colored soil.
My intent is to consider the aspects that are eternal, elemental, outside of measurable time and jurisdiction while I build on the library of colors I can find within an afternoon’s drive of my home in Oklahoma.
Connecting with the formal and sometimes subtle aspects of color and texture, the pigment hunt becomes a way of connecting with my natural environment. A record is collected of where I have been and the study of it carries both emotional, geographic, and geological significance.
